Sendai Sparrow Dance

Although the Annual “Sendai Aoba Matsuri Festival” was cancelled this year due to the Great East Japan Earthquake, the “Sendai Sparrow Dance Parade” was held instead in order to spread some cheer in Sendai.
After a moment of silence for the victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake during the opening ceremony, which was held in the civic square of Kotodai Park, the parade moved into the shopping arcades in Ichibancho and Chuodori Avenue and the participants performed dances in crisp rhythm with lots of shouting and music. As many as 70 groups participated in the parade during the two-day event, filling the City of Sendai with energy and liveliness.

International container vessels resumed operation

The operations of international container vessels resumed today at Takasago Wharf (Minami, Miyagino Ward)of the Port of Sendai which sustained damage in the disaster.
Although Takasago Wharf sustained significant damage with containers washed away by the tsunami, the recovery of the wharf, which functions as the international logistics center of Tohoku, is expected to boost the revival of the regional economy.

The Minami-Gamo Purification Center, which sustained devastating damage in the tsunami, is currently running basic operations.

Some parts of the coastal park in the Ido district in Wakabayashi Ward are used as a collection site for disaster debris.

Spread of damage into residential areas.

The Great East Japan Earthquake caused severe damage in residential areas including landslides and the collapse of retaining walls, mainly for housing complexes built in the hilly parts of suburbs during the 1960s and 1970s. Thousands of cases of damage have been confirmed so far(4,031 cases as of October 2011).
