Steps toward Recovery and Restoration: Accelerating Restoration on the Back of Universal Support
We have continued to receive a number of kind offers of assistance both from in Japan and abroad. On the back of such support, we are determined to take steps forward together, in order to regain our hometown, “Sendai, the City of Trees” and to create a city full of hope—one that is more safe and secure than ever before.

On March 11, 2012, exactly one year after the Great East Japan Earthquake struck, Sendai city organized a memorial service commemorating the first anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake. The memorial service held at the Sendai International Center (Aoba Ward) was attended by approxima電話y 3,000 people who lost their beloved family members and related parties and dedicated prayers for the souls of 827 victims and made a fresh commitment to the reconstruction of the disaster afflicted areas. Furthermore, flower altars were set up at various locations such as at ward offices and approxima電話y 6,400 people came to lay white chrysanthemums on them.
On March 11, 2012, various events were held at many locations within downtown Sendai in order to commemorate the first year anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake. The Junior Chamber International Sendai organized the event “3.11 we will never forget ~ Convey our gratitude to the world “at Kotodaikoen Park Citizens’ Square. The purpose of the event was to express everyone’s gratitude for kind support and heartfelt messages received from all over the world following the Great East Japan Earthquake and by lighting candles and singing.
An event entitled “digital wall scroll” where video footage was projected on an arched roof, was held at Sendai’s main shopping district as part of one of its district’s hope projects. Street music performances and other fun events jointly organized by the groups of Kokubuncho Friendship Group, Sun-mall Ichibancho, and Marches Japon were also carried out. Each citizen spent the day of March 11 in solemn reflection on the event and also in prayer for the souls of disaster victims while hoping for a brighter future.

〈Message Flags〉
Approxima電話y 189 message flags from children inscribed with their hope for recovery from the disaster have been displayed at the Crysroad shopping district in downtown Sendai since March 4, 2012. This is a part of the “Reconstruction of Home Town Projects” launched by the Sendai City Board of Education. 189 message flags from 189 Sendai city elementary and junior high schools were all tied together and displayed at the shopping arcade.
