[Date of Affiliation] March 9, 1957
In 1951, Members from the Association of University Women of Sendai sent flowers to an injured American soldier at the Sendai American Military Hospital on Mother’s Day. This information was relayed back to the soldier’s mother who was a member of the same association in Riverside and its remarkable impact led to the “Scholarships for TOHOKU Woman Student” being established in Riverside. This event helped Sendai inbeing chosen among several cities considered by the Riverside City council asone of their sister cities and led to establishment of the affiliation.
